About the girls on our picture banner:

This is the way Sénégalese women dressed in ancient times. There are still surviving aspects of it in some areas of Sénégal. The style of the dress indicated the ethnic group, especially the tribal scars and tattooing on the faces. The Pulaar/Fulani group still practice it, although it has mostly died out of the customs of the Wolofs. Wolof is the predominant ethnic group in Gueoul. The tooth picks (soccu) are made of soft wood and are still used to clean teeth because it is quite effective. The historic dress is worn during cultural events, The girls receiving our scholarships at the February 2008 ceremony wore these historically important clothes in honor of the importance of the occasion.
